RE: Rockdale TX RV Park

Just went through there, flat amazed at how many RV parks a place that size has. Agree that probably most occupants are semi-permanent. The one I liked the looks of best just passing by on the highway was out of town to the west on the south side of 79.
Otherwise Rockdale is a nice enough place to stay. Really depends on what you're looking for. It has a Wal-Mart, McDonalds, etc. Can't imagine there is a lot of tourist type activity in the immediate area (hence the conclusion on RV park occupants). But, centrally located to Austin, Waco, Temple, College Station.

RE: Any problems with Firefox 3.0?

There are some add-ons I really like that don't work. Wouldn't have gone to 3 had I known. Particularly hit-a-hint and locate in bookmarks. There is a work around for hit-a-hint that so far seems to be working.

RE: Info on US 59, TX 43 and US 79 in Texas

Just did it a couple of days ago, good roads. At least to 21 where I jumped off. An alternative might be 59 til you get down around The Woodlands, I think that might have more 4 lane if you like that kind of thing. Also, the closer I get to Houston the more I like to stay off 45. Maybe someone who is familiar with that route could chime in.

RE: No Rant, No Rave, Just FACTS

Gentlemen, Please get a grip. For you guys that make those comparisons from the 70s and 80s. What were you making an hour compared to today? I dare say you will find that the feul is cheaper now then, then.
Not by half...adjusted to the consumer price index 50 cent gas in 1976 would be equivalent to $1.90 today - or - what we lay out for gas today is twice what we laid out in '76.

RE: Roof Repair

If the roof isn't completely shot you may not need to replace the whole thing but with it being that old and all 4 sides rotted it doesn't sound good. In any event, should it be required the $1k for the roof sounds like a pretty fair price. But as long as your looking at replacement anyway you might get in there and poke around to determine the extend of rot. If for some reason its only in the vicinity of the latches you could probably rebuild those areas.
You can also order replacement canvas and do that yourself.

RE: Roadside Assistance Company

I just got an add-on to our RV insurance policy (Aon)for a nominal charge. Some outfit called Continental Car club. We don't get out much or far so didn't want to invest in Coach Net or Good Sam but definitely didn't want to pay for or depend on AAA. Had to use it a couple of times, fairly minor as things go (or could be) but have been pleased with their service.

RE: Assistance with Backing

Driver side 90 degree here. The good thing is its all on my property so don't have to deal with traffic. The bad thing is the trees restricting movement, not a lot of margin for error. I also found the longer trailer was easier. It was a tougher adjustment going to a long bed truck from a short bed.

RE: teenagers and camping

No teen worth their union card would admit to actually wanting to camp with their family. Its been too many years for me to know what is going through that mind but I suspect a good portion of them really have a good time but wouldn't ever admit it and another good chunk convince themselves they aren't having a good time but will appreciate it later. That leaves a pretty small percentage where problems might develop. I say pack 'em up and head out, the odds are with you.

RE: Denali NP bus- shuttle or tour dif?

Tours are considerably pricier than shuttles. Similar type vehicles I believe and tours may have some kind of video system for zooming in on wildlife...I've got mixed feelings on that...if I wanted to see a bear on TV why wouldn't I rent a video....on the other hand it might be nice to get a closeup of what you're looking at better than my bino's can provide. Anyway, narration is not mandatory on shuttles but some drivers are really good. After getting one that didn't narrate we got off and got on another shuttle that had a good driver. Just for something to do on the way back I looked at how many oncoming buses had drivers with the headset on (presumably providing narration) as I recall the odds are real good (on the order of 90+%)but as I said you can always get off and get on another.

RE: Roof Maintenance

Its a tape you put over seams. Numerous threads here if you do a search. My big problem area and I suspect yours since you noticed it in bed is where the front cap meets the roof. I'd caulk it but after awhile I guess with motion and vibration it would open up again. Hasn't been a problem (fingers crossed here) since putting on the eternabond. You can pick up info and in fact watch a video of how to do it on their web site http://www.eternabond.com/

RE: Roof Maintenance

Its not that hard but (a) put on some eternabond and be done with it and (b) carefully check out the area inside and outside - the leak may have been there for awhile and just working its way through - you might have to open it up for some repair work.

RE: Social Security Early----Or Not

Scott Burns had a column in the recent past that if I recall correctly indicated you could draw early - then repay and redraw at the higher rate should you have made it that far (sorry don't have it ready to hand)

RE: Advice Please - Westbound @ Houston, TX

Might as well stop and get something to eat as suggested. You're going to be stopped or going so slow you'll think you are anyway whether 610 or I10. The beltway is a possibility but it can get pricey and that time of day can be slow too, especially at toll booths.
